Binita was introduced to us by a person who had an eye for beauty and quality. She saw the lush and unique designs Binita produced and passionately wanted to bring her work to the US. We are fortunate to have a small collection of her work here.
About Binita Sen Weaves
Picture a little girl growing up surrounded by textiles, the colors, the textures. Then picture her sewing bits of cloth pieces together and walking around the house with this colorful trail commanding attention. “I somehow knew what to do with fabrics even at that early age, creating things out of a saree and its enchanting zari (gold thread woven into designs for saree borders).” The play of colors, texture and thought, that is Binita Sen.
Today she heads her own company, Binita Sen Weaves, bringing colors and textures to knowledgeable buyers who understand the importance of textiles in culture. In some cultures, jewelry and art are passed from generation to generation and are symbols of heritage. For Indian women, their textiles hold their heritage. Each completely handwoven scarf or shawl is imbued with the history of India. These textiles’ vibrant colors, dynamic patterns, and even their cool-on-the-body crisp feel embody this rich history.
She is also in sync with the demands of today’s needs, her products are all based on natural fibers, vegan silk, and Khadi. As she says, “These materials are sustainable, good for the wearer, and have reduced the carbon footprint.”
What began as a childhood play has become the basis of Binita’s blossoming enterprise. beginning with seven weavers she now employs 157 weavers in seven hamlets across India.
