As my first holiday season with The Evening Desk winds down I reflect on my years in brick and mortar retail stores, and before that in the baking business, when "the rush" started as soon as the first holiday decor went up and didn't end until December 24th.
It's not just the rush of customers, but an internal alarm clock would ring, starting the adrenaline and excitement for the season. Call me a masochist, but I love all the hustle and bustle of the holidays in retail. Not one minute to be idle or bored. It's different having an online store. The rush has more to do with social media posts, ad considerations, and trips to the post office, but it's a rush all the same.
Holiday frenzy in retail is nothing new. Here are some selections from my collection of vintage retail and hospitality postcards showing City of Paris, a long gone department store in San Francisco. One is soliciting holiday help via a typed card. I wonder if Rose got the job? Happy holidays!
