Rare and Complete 1811 US Post Office Directory Booklet — American Postal History
A small piece of American postal history. This 1811 booklet is the very first nationwide directory of every post office in the US at the time— an amazing document of the growing United States. With "Elihu Hobart, P. M. Abington, NH deceased" written on second page. NH stood for Nathaniel Howe who is listed as the Postmaster of Abington, Ms. in the directory. Ms was the abbreviation for Massachusetts in 1811, not Mississippi.
In 1811, the United States was expanding rapidly westward, but the postal network was still entirely reliant on post riders, stagecoaches, and rivers. The directory mapped out approximately 2,400 active post offices across the young nation.
