In 1957, the American Institute of Architects marked its hundredth year with this handsome commemorative paperweight — a solid brass disc that carries the weight of a century of American design. One face bears a proud American eagle in raised relief; the other proclaims “A New Century Beckons” alongside a clock and architectural symbols, capturing the optimism of mid-century ambition.
Sculpted by Sidney Waugh (1904–1963), one of the foremost American sculptors of the 20th century, known for his architectural monuments, fine art glass, and bronze medallic work. The edge is marked: Centennial Year, 89th Annual Convention, Washington DC May 14–17, 1957, Sidney Waugh, Sc. — the Latin abbreviation sculpsit, meaning “he sculpted it.”
Substantial and beautifully patinated, it sits with authority on any desk, drafting table, or display shelf.
