Earthquake and Fire Days of 1906 is a rare artist's book pairing the eyewitness account of Episcopal Bishop William Ford Nichols with original watercolor illustrations by San Francisco artist Susan S. McBaine, painted after photographs taken in the immediate aftermath of the 1906 earthquake and fire. Nichols traversed the shattered city to inspect the churches in his care, and his vivid, intimate prose — originally written for his children and first printed as a pamphlet to benefit Chinese Missions — reads with the urgency of a man still in shock and still in service.
McBaine's watercolors, rendered in muted, smoky tones, transform her great-grandfather's words into something you can almost feel: ash-dusted streets, toppled facades, the eerie quiet after catastrophe.
